Time to catch up on end-of-year activities for 2014 before we start with our programme for 2015. In addition to buying clothing and school uniforms for the kindergarten in Khayelitsha, A Reaching Hand also sponsored a children’s Christmas Party/Fashion Show/Graduation for a group of 30 kids being cared for by Leonie Geldenhuis. She is the founder and caregiver of an informal and extremely poor kindergarten called Teletubbies in the township of Uitsig, that cares for the children of horse and cart owners who collect recyclable garbage to earn a living.
A Reaching Hand has decided to support this kindergarten with a monthly supply of food, and to upgrade the space where the children are being cared for. However, we kicked off our support by sponsoring their end of year party, and what a performance it was! All the kids dressed in their Sunday best hoping to be crowned Mr or Mrs Teletubbies or a runner up prince or princess. Their dance moves put John Travolta and Madonna to shame. We were very proud of the performances of our future stars. Some of the children who were dressed in black and blue gowns are graduates who have started pre-primary school this year. When I look at those bright eager faces, hopeful for the future, there is no doubt in my mind that we have to do what we can to give them a chance in life. It was good to see that most of the parents also attended, eager to support their kids and share in their fun and joy. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our Swedish guests who donated clothes to our projects during their visit to Cape Town last year. This kindergarten received a generous portion of the clothes received. Thank you again to all our donors, it is because of your generous donations that we are able to support those less fortunate than ourselves.
