Ebernizer means Stone of Hope in Xhosa, the most widely spoken African language in the Cape Town area. Muriel Mayongo founded this educare center in January 2008. It is located in the shanty town of Khayelitscha.
Muriel and her husband Vuyo have opened their home to help people in their community, despite having little of their own. It was Muriel who noticed a need for a safe place for children to spend the day whilst their mothers were working or looking for work. Many of the mothers are single, some have HIV/AIDS, and most are unable to afford the costs of child care, not even a average of R260 monthly crèche fees. Some of the children were previously locked into the shacks for "safety" whilst their mother went to work, or were left to roam the streets or neighbours cared for some children. Many of the children are very young, just a few years old. Ebernizer Educare Center is run without personal gain for Muriel and Vuyo. Each day Vuyo collects children who spend the day at Educare Center.
Ebernizer Edcucare Centre strated with 4 children; today Muriel and Vuyo care for over 30 children.
With thanks to donations we have been able to built a shack in the backyard for the older children, while the babies are cared for in the main house. We have put up gates for security and we pay the ladies who work at Ebernizer small salary.
Our dream is to build a proper house to replace the shack. And to build a jungle gym.
