During her many years in Cape Town, Karin has built a large and varied social network in Cape Town’s many Townships, through the various projects funded by A Reaching Hand and also through her work as a tour guide. Through this network she is in constant contact with many extremely underprivileged adults and their extended families, which often include not only their own kids, but also the children of deceased siblings and their friends. These families are in a very extreme economic situation and need contributions to meet the costs of medications, food and many other necessities. The children of these families do not have the opportunity to finish elementary school or to dream of a university education.
Education is the one thing that enables children from Townships to break the cycle of poverty and rise above the segregation they experience in Cape Town’s most impoverished areas. A Reaching Hand funds many children and youths throughout their school attendance and university studies, paying for school fees, university fees, school uniforms and many other costs necessary for education.
